Creative Industries Mapping Document, 2001

January 26, 2001

Institution: Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Full reference: Department for Culture, Media and Sport (2001) Creative Industries Mapping Document.

Summary

This Creative Industries mapping document uses the same definition as the [LINK:959|CAPTION:original mapping as that was published in 1998] – “those industries which have their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent and which have a potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property”.

The mapping is done by sector, comprising of Advertising, Antiques, Architecture, Crafts, Design, Fashion, Film, Leisure software, Music, Performing Arts, Publishing, Software and TV and radio.

At the time of publishing, since 1998, the term itself had become more widely used and understood; in a knowledge economy the importance of these industries to national wealth is more commonly recognised; and the special needs of these industries are reflected more in policy development at national, regional and sub-regional levels. The creative industries have moved from the fringes to the mainstream.
